He was raised in a stable environment, and only encountered other horses until he was two-and-a-half years old, when he was acquired by the Gosack Wild Horse Sanctuary, a non-profit horse rescue and sanctuary located in Ashland, Oregon. While at Gosack, Gosack’s first veterinarian, William McNutt, told The Oregonian that he was treated for signs of a prolapsed penis, which he believed was caused by an infection of some sort. [3] At five years old, Gosack advertised for a new owner, and was sold to Gerald and Jenny Strickling, who live in Crook County, Oregon.
The Stricklings first met Zoo in 2007 when they purchased him from the Gosack Wild Horse Sanctuary, and immediately observed that he was a curious, bright, and affectionate horse. In the Stricklings’ words, Zoo "had an inquisitive and beautiful nature, so he was a pleasure to have around. He was just happy to be in the world and seemed to have an abundance of curiosity." [4]
The Stricklings say that when Zoo was adopted, they were told that he was “essentially an orphan.” Zoo had been transferred to the Gosack Wild Horse Sanctuary when he was two-and-a-half years old, and had been housed in a stall with two other horses for several years. According to the Stricklings, the other two horses attacked Zoo, and it took two men to separate them. In the Stricklings’ words, “Zoo was the only horse at the sanctuary who had ever been adopted.” The men assumed that he was “potentially aggressive” based on “an impulse by a volunteer,” and there was no further explanation given.
At the time of Zoo's adoption, the Stricklings were not aware that he had been vaccinated, or that he had any sort of medical condition. Zoo was house in a stall with two other horses, and although he had been vaccinated in the past, the Stricklings did not have any information about his recent vaccines.
During the time that Zoo lived with the Stricklings, he was never mistreated. Although the Stricklings were told that he had “tendencies for aggressiveness,” they did not know of any history of aggressive behavior by Zoo. According ac619d1d87
