Awards season is upon us, so in the spirit of passing on some awards season wisdom (in a very small and modest way), we decided to pass on some of the awards season wisdom that we've gathered so far. Like everything, what's true now won't be the same in three months, but we hope we pass it on so you don't have to hit every single blog post to get your daily dose of awards-season knowledge.
Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role
Although Denzel Washington's performance in American Gangster earned him a Supporting Actor Oscar nomination, it's hard to argue that he was robbed. The performances this year were all first-rate, but they all went to guys who were given better material. If he gets his lead actor nomination, he'll have to go toe-to-toe with Denzel in a show of fake-choking prowess that you just don't see in other genres.
Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role
Meryl Streep really needed an Oscar nod this year, considering how much she dominated in 2007. And with the way she's been acting lately, that seems like a foregone conclusion. This year's crop of female performances is respectable, but it doesn't match Streep's level of dominance. If she wins, Streep will be the first to ever win two consecutive Best Actress Oscars.
Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role
While most actors dread going up for an Oscar nod, John C. Reilly has embraced it. He's been on the fence about it and he's taken the project seriously enough to put up with the criticism. "Mean Streets" is a great role, but you'd think he would have been nominated for a lead Oscar role like, you know, Jimmy in 2001's "Bring It On." He has my vote for Best Supporting Actor.
